Price the household on one income
If the principal holds TN and the spouse holds TD, the household should plan on the principal's earnings alone for the duration, unless the spouse independently obtains a status that permits work. It also changes the calculation about whether to keep or sell a home in the province. Comparing the same move under a category whose dependants may work is a legitimate part of choosing a route, and it should happen before the offer is accepted. The reader must decide whether the household budget works without unverified secondary income. Start with the principal's expected pay, housing, insurance, school costs, travel, and the spouse's actual work authorization. A remote job can create immigration, tax, and employer-policy questions that need separate answers; it is not automatically permitted because payment originates outside the country.
Know which categories allow a dependent spouse to work
The rules differ by category and the differences are consequential enough to change which route a household should choose. A spouse in L-2 status is employment-authorised incident to status, and so is the dependent spouse of an E-2 treaty investor. A TD spouse is not, in any circumstance, however long the principal's assignment runs. Dependent children do not receive employment authorisation in any of these categories, although they may attend school. If a spouse's career is central to the family's plan, that fact should influence which route the principal pursues from the outset, rather than being discovered after the household has arrived and given up an income. Some qualifying dependent spouses may have work authorization tied to their derivative classification, while TD dependants do not receive employment permission merely through the TN principal. Obtain the admission record and the hiring evidence an employer requires before setting a start date.
Put every dependant's twenty-first birthday on the calendar
Dependent status in the temporary categories ends when a child turns twenty-one, and derivative eligibility in the immigrant categories reaches unmarried children under twenty-one, subject to statutory age calculation rules that can help in some circumstances and are worth assessing on the real dates. Write down each child's date of birth and set it against the expected timeline for the whole assignment. A child who will age out partway through needs a plan of their own, most often a student route with its own admission, financial and reporting requirements. Starting that conversation two years early is comfortable; starting it two months early is not, and the difference is usually a lost school year. The reader must decide what happens before a dependant child reaches twenty-one. Put the exact birthday on the calendar and investigate independent study or other status options well in advance. Marriage, birth, and passport records establish family relationship, but they do not extend derivative status after the age limit. Do not wait for a school acceptance or lease renewal to expose the timing problem.
